Day 1: From Thessaloniki to Meteora—The Land of Suspended Reality
Your adventure kicks off in Thessaloniki, Greece’s bustling second city. But before you get too comfy with the coastal vibes, we’re zipping you inland to the otherworldly Meteora. Forget flat terrain, the UNESCO World Heritage site Meteora is all about dramatic, sky-high rock formations with 14th-century monasteries perched so precariously atop them that you’ll wonder if they were dropped there by a divine hand.
The word "Meteora" means “suspended in space,” and one look at these majestic monoliths and you'll feel like you're stepping into an episode of Game of Thrones.
After a scenic drive and coffee pitstop you’ll arrive at the Venetikos River, a spot so serene it practically begs for Instagram shots. Then it’s on to the real stars of the show: the monasteries. We’ll visit the Monastery of Agios Stefanos and several viewpoints where you can gape at these jaw-dropping structures. If you're up for it, you can even enter one or two monasteries, but for the less stair-inclined, Agios Stefanos is a no-step-required option.
Cap off your day by watching one of the most magical sunsets of your life—because let’s face it, nothing says “I'm on an epic Greek journey” like gazing at the sun setting over ancient monasteries from a rocky outcrop. From there, we’re heading to the traditional village of Metsovo for a well-earned overnight stay.
Day 2: Metsovo to Ioannina—Mountain Magic Meets Urban Charm
Wake up in Metsovo, a charming village nestled in the Pindus Mountains, where time seems to have stood still. This town is the epitome of picture-perfect, with its traditional stone houses, wooden balconies, and cobblestone streets. Before we hit the road, take some time to soak in the mountain views or grab a cup of strong Greek coffee from one of the local cafes.
As our Epirus escorted tour makes its way to Ioannina, we’ll stop at some hidden gems like the Aoos Lake, where the reflections of the surrounding forest make the water look like a mirror, and the Open-Air Water Power Museum in Mantani. Oh, and if you’ve ever wanted to see a donkey farm, Farma Metsovou has got you covered. These friendly long-eared locals provide nutrient-rich donkey milk that’s apparently second only to mother’s milk in its nutritional benefits. Who knew?
By the time we roll into Ioannina, you’ll be ready for a bit of urban flair mixed with mountain magic. This lakeside city is the perfect mix of history, culture, and vibrant nightlife. Check into your hotel, enjoy a relaxed dinner, and prepare for more exploration tomorrow.
Day 3: Ioannina—The City of Legends and Lakes
Today is all about exploring Ioannina, and this city does not disappoint. Start with a leisurely stroll along the shores of Lake Pamvotida, where you can snap a selfie with the majestic mountains as your backdrop. Then, head into the old town to visit Ioannina’s famous castle, a fortress that dates back to Byzantine times. Inside, you’ll find the Byzantine Museum, which offers a fascinating glimpse into the city’s history, along with books and artifacts that’ll make any history buff swoon.
For something a bit quirkier, take a short cruise to the tiny island in the middle of the lake, where the famous Ali Pasha (think Greece’s answer to Genghis Khan) met his dramatic end. If history in wax form is more your speed, don’t miss the Pavlos Vrellis Greek History Wax Museum—where history comes alive, literally.
In the evening, kick back with a lakeside dinner and some local specialties, including bourdeto (a spicy fish stew) and feta saganaki - because everything is better when fried cheese is involved…
Day 4: The Zagorochoria—Where Mountains, Villages, and Adventure Collide
Day four has you diving deep into the wilds of Zagorochoria, a cluster of 46 traditional villages spread across the Epirus mountains like a treasure map of stone houses, cobbled paths, and ancient bridges.
We’ll start in Monodendri, home to some of the most heart-stopping views of the Vikos Canyon—think Grand Canyon but, you know, Greek. From there, we’ll take in the mysterious Stone Forest, where time and weather have carved the landscape into something straight out of a fantasy novel. And if ancient stone bridges get you excited, the Kokoris and Plakidas bridges will not disappoint with their Indiana Jones vibes.
Feeling adventurous? Try optional rafting down the crystal-clear waters of the Voidomatis River. If water sports aren’t your thing, no worries—you can just admire the serenity of this snaking turquoise stretch of water. After a full day of exploring, we’ll head back to Thessaloniki for a final night of Greek hospitality.
Day 5: Thessaloniki—Ending with a City Splash
Your Epirus escorted tour wraps up back where it all began, but this time, we’re giving you a taste of Thessaloniki’s rich cultural and culinary scene. This vibrant city is a blend of ancient history and modern cool, and we’ll kick off the day with a three-hour city tour. Highlights include the White Tower, the iconic symbol of Thessaloniki, and the charming streets of the old town.
Feeling hungry? Thessaloniki is a culinary haven, and a food tour will take you through bustling markets and hidden eateries where you can taste local delicacies like bougatsa (a sweet or savory pastry) and soutzoukakia (spicy meatballs in rich tomato sauce). Alternatively, try your hand at a cooking class or explore the city’s art scene with a workshop from a local artist.
After lunch, you’ll have a bit more time to soak in the city’s vibes before we wrap up the tour and take you to the airport, no doubt with memories (and maybe a few souvenirs) in tow.
Epirus is a land of contrasts: wild mountains, serene lakes, traditional villages, and vibrant cities. Once you uncover its secrets, you’ll wonder why you ever thought Greece was just about beaches and islands. There’s a whole mountain world waiting for you, so why not see it now?
